 October 16-21, 2022 This week we came together as a whole school for Take Me Outside Day. We partnered up with our buddies from Mrs. Gibson and Mrs. Smith's classes and explored the land that surrounds our community. Students were excited to share afterwards about their afternoon and the fun they had with their buddy.  Aside from Take Me Outside Day, this week we: -Learned about how to use a tree cookie to identify the age and growing conditions of a tree. -Celebrated our first stories of the year by sharing them with our classmates. -Explored the 3 levels of government and the services they offer citizens. -Practiced different ways to start sentences to challenge ourselves as writers. -Grade 6's completed an escape room on greatest common factors and lowest common multiples. -Grade 5's practiced different multiplication strategies, looking for ways to be efficient. -Used our "close reading strategies" to find evidence in text to answer questions. -Looked at maki
 I hope everyone had a wonderful thanksgiving. This week we: -Learned how to classify leaves based on their characteristics, used a dichotomous key to figure out types of trees, and we had an open book science test, reviewing vocabulary, the water cycle, parts of a tree and how humans use the forest. -Reviewed the advantages and disadvantages of different ways groups makes decisions, talked about the different types of representatives we have in our three levels of government and were introduced to the principles of democracy (FREJ-Freedom, Equity, Representation and Justice). -Published our "Worst Picture Day Ever" writing, practiced editing and worked on identifying sounds/blends to support our spelling. Some students are not finished publishing and are bringing home their journals to finish typing in the Google Classroom. -Visualized our reading of Ban this Book. -Created original art pieces using leaves from the natural garden space, layering wax crayon, watercolour paint

October 3-6, 2022 It might have been a short week but we packed in so much learning!  This week we: -Learned the water cycle, how transpirtation works, what is a tree. parts of a tree, building a tree out of nature's "loose parts" and the difference between deciduous and coniferous trees (we are experts on all things tree!) -Looked at how groups make decisions and the advantages/disadvantages of different ways groups can make decisions -Worked on our Worst Picture Day Ever stories, learning how to make strong endings and practicing the editing and revision process. Stay tuned for our published stories coming soon. -Grade 6's worked on multiples in math which has been a great review of our multiplication facts. Grade 5's worked on their multiplication skills and continued working with numbers up to one million. -On Thursday, you should have recieved an email from your child regarding their first month at school.
