Week of Sept 6-9th

We had a great week even though it was only 4 days of learning! We took the opportunity to be outside journaling, looking at natural objects. Students were introduced to the journaling strategy "Zoom in/Zoom out" where they looked at an object as a whole then looked closer at a specific part. In our art journals, we also practiced upside down drawing which was a good challenge, even for the teacher!

In science, we began our unit on Trees and Forests. We looked at why the forest is important and different ways we use the forest. We investigated living (biotic) and non-living (abiotic) components of the forest in a picture scavenger hunt.

We began the novel "Ban this Book". It has great connections to decision making which will be part of social studies this year as well as advocacy. Students had the opportunity to visit the library and pick out books. Books are allowed to be brought home (I'm really encouraging them to read nightly) and return for Monday's library day.

In writing, we explored mentor texts based on personal stories. Our next step will be to write about different personal experienecs and draw out our inner storytelling skills.

In math, we have be working with different challenges to help us activate our mathematical thinking. We have built shapes, tried to solve the value of shapes, figure out different numbers to multiply and even did a check in to see what we remembered from last year. Starting Monday, we will be splitting into grade 5 and 6 math groups taught by the 5/6 team and Ms. Copithorne.

We have also worked on our social emotional learning about how to be a good classmate, active listener and how to work as a group through different team challenges. Our first focused health lesson was on respect-what it looks like, sounds like, feels like.

The Google Classroom is up. Students have received an inviation to join in their CBE email. If you are new to the school, we are still in the process of activating accounts. At this time, there are no assignments posted. It will be used ocassionally through the year, mostly as a place to post resources for assignments or hand in assignments that are completed digitally.
